Read guide →How we evaluate help desk software
Every guide on this page is based on four criteria: pricing verified directly from vendor sites, support quality testing (we open tickets and measure response quality), use-case specificity (we write for specific team types, not generic "best for everyone" lists), and user review analysis from G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot.
For ecommerce teams, we test whether order data surfaces automatically inside tickets without manual lookup. For enterprise buyers, we verify SSO, audit logs, and SLA tooling. If you spot a pricing error, email contact@commsadvisor.com with the article URL.
Best help desk software for ecommerce (Shopify, WooCommerce)
Ecommerce support teams have one core problem that generic help desk tools don't solve well: agents need to see order status, tracking numbers, and return history without leaving the ticket. Gorgias was built for exactly this — it pulls Shopify data directly into every conversation and lets agents issue refunds or cancel orders from inside the ticket. Pricing is based on ticket volume rather than seat count: the Starter plan handles 50 tickets/month for $10/month, and most small Shopify stores land on the Basic plan at $60/month for 300 tickets.
For WooCommerce stores, Gorgias works but requires a third-party plugin for the WooCommerce integration, whereas Freshdesk handles WooCommerce through its Marketplace app more cleanly. Freshdesk's free plan covers up to 10 agents with basic ticketing — enough for a team that handles under 200 tickets a day. If you grow past that, the Growth plan is $15/agent/month and adds automation rules that can auto-tag orders by shipping carrier or product type.
Help Scout is worth a look if you want something that feels less like a call center tool. It starts at $22/agent/month and has a cleaner interface than Freshdesk, though its native Shopify integration is less deep than Gorgias. The practical answer for most ecommerce teams: if you are on Shopify and handle more than 200 tickets a month, Gorgias pays for itself in time saved. If you are on WooCommerce or running a smaller operation, Freshdesk's free tier is the lowest-risk starting point.
Free and open-source help desk options
Freshdesk's free plan is the most-used starting point for teams that need a real ticketing system at no cost — it supports up to 10 agents with email ticketing, a knowledge base, and basic reports. The catch is that automation rules, SLA policies, and round-robin assignment all require paid plans starting at $15/agent/month. For teams that just need to stop using a shared Gmail inbox, the free plan is genuinely useful.
For open-source options, osTicket is the most mature. It is free to self-host and covers the core ticketing workflow: intake forms, agent assignment, SLA tracking, and a customer portal. The trade-off is obvious — you manage the hosting, updates, and database yourself. Zammad is another solid open-source option with a more modern interface and built-in live chat; the hosted version starts at €5/agent/month if you don't want to self-host. Both are worth considering for teams with an IT person on staff who is comfortable with Linux and MySQL.
Zoho Desk has a free tier for up to 3 agents that includes multi-channel support (email plus social), making it useful for very small teams that need more than just email. Beyond 3 agents, the Standard plan is $14/agent/month. The free tier is more limited than Freshdesk's in terms of agent count but includes some features — like Twitter and Facebook integration — that Freshdesk locks behind paid plans.
